We are called to be servants of Jesus Christ and servant leaders; therefore the name Lay Servant and Lay Servant Ministries seems very appropriate for this ministry of leading, caring and communicating.For current Certified Lay Speakers (Servants):Persons who are currently certified lay speakers will be "grandparented" in to the new system. However, they are strongly encouraged by the General Board of Discipleship to take the new Basic Class and any of the excellent additional 5 classes* that would fill in gaps they may have in training and knowledge. They can do this as part of their required continuing education to remain certified.For those wanting to become a Local Church Lay Servant:Basic Course $20 (entitles you to serve in your own congregation)For those wanting to become a Certified Lay Servant:In order to preach in their own church only, one must take:Basic Course $20 and*Go Preach! Advanced class 10 hours of training (in 3 classes) For those wanting to become a (new) Lay Speaker:Basic Course: $20*Go Preach plus the following 10 hour courses:*Finding Spiritual Gifts $30, which includes materials*Leading Small Groups 10 hours approximately*Leading in Prayer: Let the Whole Church Say Amen 10-12 hours (84% of our denomination do not know how to pray)*Policy, Practice and the Mission of the UMCThere are other advanced courses available but the above 5 are required in order to become a Lay Speaker, which is a Certified Lay Servant who provides pulpit supply. Or, anyone may take the Basic Course, go no further and be a Local Church Lay Servant. You must take a refresher course every 3 years and file an Annual Report each year at your church Charge Conference.
